From Shopping Mall to Science Center
In the heart of Mo i Rana, we contributed to the transformation of a former furniture store and shopping mall into a vibrant 3,600 sqm science center. Launched in 2019 in collaboration with Tanken Arkitektur and Kunnskapsparken Helgeland, the project aimed to create an interactive learning environment focused on mathematics, science, and technology.
Through workshops and co-creative processes, we developed a flexible floor plan and a cohesive design concept. Colors, materials, and graphic elements were carefully selected to support themes such as sustainability, regional natural resources, and industry. Each exhibition area was given its own identity, with specific color codes and symbols, creating seamless transitions between different themes. A key challenge was adapting the existing lighting infrastructure to the center’s new function. Through careful planning and adjustments, we created a lighting scheme that enhances both the exhibitions and the visitor experience. The result is a dynamic and inclusive science center that invites visitors of all ages to explore and learn through interactivity and hands-on engagement.
The Sensory Room is the largest installation at Vitensenter Nordland, inspired by the beautiful caves of Nordland — both above and below water. The structure is primarily built from horizontal 21 mm birch plywood, CNC-milled and laminated in sets of three before assembly. In total, 51 unique layers were cut, each replicated three times, resulting in a total height of 3,213 mm. Due to the shape and size of the panels, approximately 2,750 individual pieces were produced, fastened in place with 10,000 screws and between 50 and 100 liters of glue. This massive puzzle was brought to life by the center’s own cabinetmaker, Espen Bjørnbak.
At the heart of Vitensenter Nordland stands “The Tree of Life” — a sculptural installation developed in collaboration with Tanken Arkitekter, stretching from floor to ceiling with an impressive 10-meter canopy. Partially surrounded by an amphitheater, it serves as a natural gathering point for school groups and visitors. Children are drawn to the pulsating light in the trunk, play on the green carpet, and listen intently to stories beneath the tree’s comforting canopy.

Floor plan
Through a flexible and intuitive layout, we have created a natural flow between the center’s various zones. The exhibition areas are organized to support both thematic learning and free exploration, with open spaces and clear transitions that invite curiosity and participation.
